The Marine Corps is a great career path. In order to be a Marine, you need have many skills. Even though the basic training required for all persons who enlist into the Marine Corps is intense, the life beyond those 13 weeks is an honor.  As a Marine, you are entitled to many benefits such as education benefits, financial benefits, and being a part of brother hood for the rest of a persons life. The Marine Corps may be the smallest branch of the military, however, it is the most honorable when it comes to protecting our nation.

Under the command of the Department of the Defense, there are four different branches of the armed forces; however, the Coast Guard is under the command of the Department of Homeland Security. The four different branches are the Army, the Navy, the Air Force, and the Marine Corps. Each branch is required a different role in securing our nation. Even though the Marines are the smallest of the four branches, they are a highly mobile amphibious attack force. Not only are they trained to attack from water and to secure an area on foreign soil but also for rapid deployment. Also, the Marines are usually the first Unites States Military personnel on site.

There are many different benefits that you can acquire from the Marine Corps. The initial benefit that Marines get is being a part of a life long brotherhood. Marines also obtain great health benefits. Every active duty Marine and their immediate family members get free health and dental care. If they retire from the Marine Corps, that person and their family still gets those health benefits. Also, they get housing benefits; however, if a Marine is single then he/she will live in the barracks with another Marine. If the Marine has a family then they will  be in the military housing program that gives the Marine and their family their own house on base. The military will give qualified Marines a housing allowance, which is for Marines that do not wish to live on base with their family. Another great benefit of being a Marine is that they get an opportunity to travel all around the world. A Marine can be stationed at a Marine base anywhere from Hawaii to Japan. There are also education benefits that are available through the Marine Corps. Up to 100% of a Marines education through different programs such as, tuition assistance, the post 9-11 GI bill, and the Marine Corps college fund. ("www.marines.com")

Every Marine has the opportunity to live the so called "American Dream" that they work so hard to protect.  Earning a steady salary while you train, helps teach Marines how to be financially smart and stable. While on active duty, the Marine Corps will provide a recruit, their family a house, and cost of living allowance. This will then teach young recruits how to spend money wisely while still living a good life style. Also, after 20 years Marines can retire with a full pension and benefits. (Www.marines.com")

Question:
What are the different ranks and how do you get them?

Source:
Marines.com. N.p., n.d. Web. 21 May 2013. <http://www.marines.com/becoming-a-marine/commissioning-programs>.

There are many different ranks in the Marine Corps, but they are broken into four different groups. Ranks not only show your standing in the Corps but also determines your pay grade; the higher your rank, the more you get paid. The NCO ranks, which vary from private to command sergeant major, are warrant officers, also company grade officers and, finally, field grade officers. Ranks can be earned in many different ways but mostly by hard work and showing your commitment to the Corps.  NCO ranks can only be earned by enlisted soldiers. An enlisted soldier will never be able to become an officer unless they go to school and become commissioned. All officers out rank even the highest NCO's. ("Marines.com")

The Marine Corps is responsible for providing power projection from the sea by using the Navy ("www.marines.com"). Power projection, also know as force projection, is a term used by the military to intimidate other nations by using threat or force ("Military"). Even though every Marine is a rifleman, they have many other duties, such as being a mechanic, or an engineer. Each job a Marine is given contributes to the successfulness of the Marine Corps.

Question 3

Question 3:
What type of training activities do Marines go through?

Sources:

"Recruit Training ." US Marine Corps. U.S Marine Corps. Web. 20 May 2013. http://www.marines.com/home.

("Recruit Training ")

Week 1- As the recruitee begins his journey to become a Marine, they must stand before a Drill Instructor who will explain the Uniform Code of Military Justice. They are then issued the necessary gear needed. Later, they will go through medical evaluations and the Initial Strength Test.

Week 2- Recruits are then led into the barracks where they will learn discipline as well as teamwork. Here the Drill Instructors focus on teaching certain simple regulations that should be followed.

Week 3- Future Marines will now be introduced to the Bayonet Assault Course. This course teaches the recruits how to properly use a bayonet to kill an opponent. When this course is over a recruitee will have mastered the technique of using a bayonet.

Week 4- Recruits will now be entering more close combat training. As a part of this training they are given Pugil Sticks. Pugil sticks are a padded pole used to mock rifle combat. Recruits will have to learn to face their fears and overpower their opponent.

Week 5- This week is used to learn the martial arts side of the Marine Corps. Marines will have to learn how to fight unarmed. As well as self-defense training, the recruits will also undergo mind and character building.

Week 6-  Recruits will now face more fear by completing the rapelling course. Rappelling is a controlled slide down a rope that helps prepare recruits for deployment from helicopters, navigating difficult areas and gaining access to buildings during raids.

Week 7- This is what is known as the "Grass Week". During Grass Week, they will learn the needed safety and principles while they practice firing their M16 without ammunition. They learn how to shoot from multiple firing position: sitting, kneeling, standing and in the prone.

Week 8- Recruits will learn to fire live rounds. Drill Instructors watch closely to see if their recruits are concentrating and taking well-aimed shots. Recruits will begin working on accuracy with 50 rounds of slow fire, one shot at a time, and move up to rapid fire, 10 shots in a row. At the end of the week, they see if they meet qualification on the Field Fire portion and the Known Distance course. They will then earn the Rifle Marksman badge, the Rifle Sharpshooter badge or the coveted Rifle Expert badge.

Week 9- Recruits will overcome obstacles on the Confidence Course. They must focus while there is choas around them. They will go through eleven unique challenges. First, they complete these individually and then in groups of four on a taller course.

Week 10- During this week, recruits learn to communicate with their fellow recruits. While many weapons fire at once, they will use hand signals to climb over walls and under barbed wire. Also, they learn to work together to respond to evolving situations on the battlefeild.

Week 11- This week is the hardest week for the recruits. Everything they were taught in weeks 1 through 10 will be tested in what is called "The Crucible". With little food and sleep, they will be challenged for 54 hours straight. In order to get through it, you have to have the heart, ability, mind, and desire to be a Marine.

Week 12- At the end of The Crucible, each platoon is presented with the Marine Corps Emblem- the eagle, globe, and anchor. This is when the recruits are first adressed as "Marine". Over the 12 week period, the recruits are transformed from civilians to Marines.

To become a Marine, there are many requirements a person needs to meet. You need to be physically fit and, according to some of my sources, you may also need to be crazy and daring you need to be up for a challenge. There are all types of requirements that you have to meet to be eligible to enlist.  Once you enlist you have to meet some physical fitness requirements called the PFT and you have to go through some medical screenings. Also, you need to be mentally prepared for the intense training that you are about to undergo on your journey to becoming a Marine.

What I Want to Know About My Topic

As I begin my search, I have many questions, and I'm sure more will develop during this precess.  ( I have found that the more I learn about most subjects, the more questions and fewer answers I have!) Right now, my overarching essential question is "What is everyday life like in the Marine Corps?" To find answers to this broad inquiry, I will look for the answers to more specific questions, such as

1. What does it take to become a Marine?
2. What do Marines do?
3. What types of training activities do Marines go through?
4. What are ranks and how do you get them?
5. What are the financial perks of being a Marine?
6. What types of benefits can you get from the Marine Corps?
7. What separates the Marine Corps from other branches of the military?
8. What types of jobs are available in the Marine Corps?

The Story Behind My Topic Choice

The main reason I am researching the Marine Corps is because it has been a dream of mine ever since I was a little kid to join the Marines.  I always liked the idea of putting my life on the line for my country, although the training is intense, I think its fun at the same time.  I chose the Marines because I admire the respect they get from the people they serve to protect.
